RE510 Educational PEM Fuel Cell
The Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell is one of the current leading contenders as a power source for use in motor vehicles. The fuel cell generates electrical power directly from hydrogen and air producing only pure water and heat as a by-product.

Unlike other educational units on the market the Hilton RE510 utilises an award winning module that is identical to those used in an actual vehicle power supply currently in production. This incorporates a unique membrane electrode assembly for the stack cells, each of which is internally reinforced and water cooled. This gives the cell a high watt density and allows students to investigate a practical fuel cell with a realistic output capable of driving significant electrical loads up to 1.5kW. Optional electrical loads are also available to allow graphic demonstration of the capabilities of the unit.

An integral computer control system and data acquisition software allows automatic start-up and shut down with full safety monitoring, hydrogen detection and alarm system.

RE520 Educational Alkaline Fuel Cell
A bench top hydrogen fuel cell with integral control system and electrical load. The unit allows students to investigate the performance of a fuel cell under varying load and system temperature.

The unit is fully instrumented and supplied with WindowsTM based software, allowing the cell current, voltage and fuel consumption to be recorded as the load and operating temperature is varied.

The unit may be operated under fully automatic or manual control thereby allowing students with a broad range of abilities to gain valuable experience of technology that is destined to be of increasing importance.

To ensure operator safety the unit incorporates both software and mechanical interlocks and a flammable gas detection system that is linked to the main control unit.

H101 Heat Exchanger Service Unit
This bench top unit enables students to study in qualitative and basic numeric terms the most common types of heat exchanger found in industry. Illustrated with the optional Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger installed, other optional heat exchangers are available that may be fitted to the service unit.
These include:

·         Concentric Tube Heat Exchanger (H101A)

·         Plate Heat Exchanger (H101B)

·         Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger (H101C)

·         Jacketed Vessel with Coil and Stirrer (H101D).

·         Extended Concentric Tube Heat Exchanger (H101E)

·         Extended Plate Heat Exchanger (H101F)

All heat exchangers have clear plastic exteriors allowing visual examination of the construction.  An integral heater and circulator provide a controlled temperature hot water source for testing the performance of each heat exchanger. Instrumentation allows measurement of all relevant temperatures and the flow rate of the hot and cold streams.

A computer upgrade (HC101) is available using the Hilton Data Logger System and menu driven Windows software with tabulated, graphical and annotated schematic displays In addition the Data Logger System may be detached and used for other applications in the laboratory.

H111 Heat Transfer Service Unit
This service unit together with the optional demonstration units allows students to study various aspects of Conduction, Convection and Radiation both numerically and visually. The optional demonstration units available include:

Linear Heat Conduction (H111A)
Radial Heat Conduction (H111B)
Laws of Radiant Heat Transfer & Radiant Heat Exchange (H111C)
Combined Convection and Radiation (H111D)
Extended Surface Heat Transfer (H111E)
Radiation Errors in Temperature Measurement (H111F)
• Unsteady State Heat Transfer (H111G)

The service unit provides safe adjustable power to drive various aspects of each optional demonstration unit as well as multi point digital temperature indication and digital display of all relevant parameters. These include Volts, Amps, Radiation, Light Intensity,Velocity and Flow.

A computer upgrade (HC111) is available using the Hilton Data Logger System and menu driven Windows software with tabulated, graphical and annotated schematic displays In addition the Data Logger System may be detached and used for other applications in the laboratory.

H050 Boyles Law Demonstrator
The demonstration of Boyle’s Law (pV = Constant) is one of the fundamental experiments for student chemists, physicists and engineers of all disciplines.

The H050 bench top unit is completely self-contained incorporating a combined compressor and vacuum pump, allowing investigation both above and below atmospheric pressure.

Instrumentation includes gas pressure, volume and temperature allowing the investigation of the characteristic gas equation pV=mRT by more advanced students.

For operator safety the unit includes a high pressure cut out, relief valves, residual current circuit breaker and overload cut out.

H060 Laboratory Cooling Plant With Ice Store
A bench top unit, that when combined with the Hilton Air and Water Heat Pump R832 and Bench Top Cooling Tower H892 allows investigation of both flow and batch heating and cooling processes, the vapour compression refrigeration cycle and evaporative or dry cooling.

The Hilton Air and Water Heat Pump R832 and Bench Top Cooling Tower H892 are connected to the H060 unit using push fit couplings and are easily disconnected for operation to their full specification in isolation.

Optional computerised data acquisition is available for all three units enabling students to investigate both steady state and transient response of the isolated or combined apparatus.

H813 Dew Point Hygrometer
A complete self contained dew point hygrometer that allows rapid and repeated measurement of the dew point of air using the classic chilled mirror method.

A small air sampling pump draws air from either the laboratory or a remote location through the sensing chamber. The temperature at which water vapour condenses on the mirror is recorded together with the ambient dry bulb temperature using the thermometers supplied. Together, the measurements allows students to determine the condition of the sampled air either by calculation or using the psychrometric chart supplied.

The unit is complimentary to the Hilton Air Conditioning Laboratory Unit A660 and the Bench Top Cooling Tower H892.
